After a thumping win over the Left Front in the Lok Sabha Elections 2009, Mamata is not the person to relax. She is instead planning to up the ante against the Leftists and start the ground work for the Assembly Elections in 2011.
Her party Trinamool Congress, after realizing the immense influence of the 24 hour news channels is planning to launch their own media house to take on “24 Ghanta” and “Aakash Bangla” news channels both run by CPM members. Not much surprise in the name of the proposed channel “Jago Bangla” though. The party already runs a weekly mouthpiece of the same name. Jago Bangla was also her warcry during her struggle against the government all through the runup to the elections starting from Singur, Nandigram and finally the election campaign.
Didi’s is clearly eyeing the Chief Minister’s office this time and why not? The Left Front has never faced such a disastrous elections in its 33 years history of uninturrupted rule in the state and has been routed by the Trinamool Congress – Congress combine both in the cities and the rural areas even loosing in constituencies considered to be the strongholds of the red party.
The party is finalizing the contours of the 24 hours satellite news channel aided by Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting Chowdhury Mohan Jatua also from the party.
“The party’s been thinking of a 24-hour news channel for some time…all parties want one. The thought behind it is to disseminate correct information among the people,” said Jatua.
The idea of a news channel as a party mouthpiece is though nothing original with many political parties especially from the south having full fledged news channels for quite some time. The CPM has its channel in Kerala, the AIADMK has Jaya TV, DMK has its own Kalaignar TV, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has two channels while the Pattali Makkal Katchi has Makkal TV. But Jago Bangla TV by Trinamool Congress once launched will surely act as a force multiplier in a state where people are known to take keen interest in political affairs and politics is discussed in schools, college canteens, government offices and social gatherings.
The fiery lady is surely going to put up a fight the Left Front has never faced in any election in the state.
